“Jobs and growth”, the catch cry and the mantra of the Coalition Government is turning into more than just hollow words and is now a real threat to the economy.

Recent jobless figures published by Roy Morgan research shows that 2.498 million Australians are now unemployed or underemployed, That is 18.9%.

The figures also show that for 24 straight months more than 2 million Australians have been looking for work or looking for more work.

While the Coalition Government claims that there has been an increase in employment over the past year, this has been largely driven by a large jump in part-time employment. Figures for part-time employment rose by 433,000 to 4,375,000.
