Kerry: Israel Can Not Be A Jewish State And Democratic At The Same Time
John Kerry said Israel has a choice over whether Jews and Arabs can to live together in one state or as two separate states.
Mr Kerry said if the choice is one state, Israel can not be Jewish or democratic and it won’t ever really be at peace. He also said “Moreover, the Palestinians will never fully realize their vast potential in a homeland of their own with a one-state solution”
“most on both sides understand this basic choice,”
According to Mr Kerry the majority of Israelis and Arabs don’t think it can happen “…They just don’t believe that it can happen.”
The only way for Israel and its neighbors to have peace according to the put going Secratry of State is for there to be a two state solution. “the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. It is the only way to ensure Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state, living in peace and security with its neighbors.”
He continued “It is the only way to ensure a future of freedom and dignity for the Palestinian people.”
Israel and Palestine have been in conflict since The mid 20th century. The conflict is wide-ranging, and the term is sometimes also used in reference to the earlier sectarian conflict in Mandatory Palestine, between the Jewish yishuv and the Arab population under British rule. It has been referred to as the world’s “most intractable conflict”, with the ongoing Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip reaching 49 years.
Many attempts have been made to broker a two-state solution, involving the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel (after Israel’s establishment in 1948). In 2007, the majority of both Israelis and Palestinians, according to a number of polls, preferred the two-state solution over any other solution as a means of resolving the conflict.
