China Sends Aircraft Carrier Into The South China Sea

China has sent its sole aircraft carrier and other warships to the South China Sea. The move comes amid tension in the region after President-Elect Donald Trump interfered in diplomatic channels and spoke to the “President” of Taiwan by phone.

The Chinese aircraft carrier is being accompanied by five vessels and  passed southeast of the Pratas Islands.  Taiwan claims the Pratas Islands as part of its territory.

The ABC reported that the carrier group earlier passed 90 nautical miles south of Taiwan’s southernmost point via the Bashi Channel, between Taiwan and the Philippines.

Taiwan says they are staying vigilant and flexible. The ministry declined to say whether Taiwan fighter jets were scrambled or if submarines had been deployed.
