Sudanese person seeking asylum from Manus Island detention dies in Brisbane
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection says a 27-year-old Sudanese person seeking asylum from Manus Island detention centre has died in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital after being airlifted to Australia for urgent treatment.
“The Department is not aware of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and expresses its sympathies to his family and friends,” a statement from said the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
The Sundanese man seeking asylum had been flown to Brisbane to be treated in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital from Manus Island.
It is unclear if the emergency is due to a result of of head injuries or an underlining medical condition. According to the spokesperson for the Refugee Action Council the individual seeking asylum had suffered a number of blackouts and collapses over the last few months.
