Turnbull Government’s Christmas Present To Australia – Inaction On Climate Change & Rising Pollution

Figures released today show that the Turnbull Government is not going to reach is commitments on addressing 2030 reduction targets. The Government’s own projections show emissions in 2030 will be just 0.5 per cent lower than 2005 levels, rather than the Government’s own targets of 26-28 per cent lower.

For the second year in the row the Turnbull Government have used Christmas to hide data that shows Australia’s emissions are growing.

The figures show Australia’s pollution rose 0.8 per cent in the year to June 2016, and almost 2.5 per cent since June 2014.

The data also shows a shocking 16.2 per cent increase in annual electricity emissions in the last two years.

The Australian Labor Party has said the Turnbull Government “sings to the tune of right wing extremists in his party; and rising emissions are the inevitable result.’ Labor has also said the Turnbull Government is dragging their feet on climate action.

The Turnbull Government has also been paralysed for two and a half years regarding recommends around new vehicle emission standards for cars on Australian roads.

During this time car companies have been able to sell vehicles in Australia that are too dirty to legally sell in U.S., Canada, UK, Europe, Japan and elsewhere. Australia is one of the very few developed nations in the world without vehicle emissions standards, which increases the cost of running a car for owners as well as increases our pollution levels.
