Could The USA’s Electoral College Elect Clinton Next Week ? Theoretically, It Could

The short answer to this question is –  Yes, according the the USA’s constitution this is possible. The other question that should be asked is will it happen?  Short answer no it will not happen.

The website explains that it is possible for a presidential candidate to win the Electoral College vote even the candidate loses the national popular vote. This has happend three times in U.S. history. In 2000  George W. Bush lost the popular vote by about 540,000 votes to Al Gore, but won the electoral vote, 271 to 266.

Should we be excited and expect the college to flex its muscle and elect Clinton? – No, the reality is the Electoral College is a mere formality.They will elect Trump, they follow the expression of the people from the ballot box. Presidential Electors to the Electoral Collegeare theoretically free to vote as their consciences dictate, they could vote for Clinton if the wished to. Also,theoretically, if enough Presidential Electors voted against Trump, the Electoral College could dump him.

So why does the USA’s have an Electrol College? Short answer – they didn’t trust the people in a direct election. The  USA’s Constitution is designed to ensure “that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.
