Sickening, shortsighted, and unsustainable is how some have described the sacking of staff at Fairfax, MEAA CEO Paul Murphy has said “This is a body blow.” Mr Murphy also described the redundancies as “yet another savage cut to editorial. We will be fighting for every job.”
120 journalists are set to lose their jobs at Fairfax media after it was announced the company was cutting staffing in its news and business divisions. Fairfax has said they will enter into a consultation period with the industry’s Union, MEAA.
Fairfax stated they are seeking to reduce costs for the company and feel this can be done through redundancies and tightening budgets.
Staff at Fairfax have voted to take industrial action until Monday over the redundancies.
