170 (140 guests and 30 staff) taken hostage, including American, Turkish, Chinese, French, Indian and Algerian nationals who were in the hotel. At least 27 people have been killed.
A United Nations official told Reuters on condition of anonymity mentioned Peacekeepers observed 12 dead bodies in the basement of the hotel and another 15 on the second floor.
The Gunmen freed some, including those able to recite verses of the Koran.
Some reports state that as many as 10 terrorists were involved. An African Jihadist, Al-Mourabitoun a group based in northern Mali, claimed responsibility on Twitter, but this has not yet been verified. The attackers moved floor by floor in the hotel. Hostages have commented that the gunmen were heard shouting “Allahu Akbar (God is greatest)” as they entered hotel.
