The Gay Profile Of Australia

For the past few weeks the topic of same-sex marriage has been in the headlines along with crazy people who have said they would divorce if gay people were allowed to marry. Now with Mexico and even the Pitcairn Islands have legalised same-sex marriage.

In Australia the debate still continues, 72% of Australians support same-sex marriage. Support for same-sex marriage in Australia is at its highest then it has ever been and it is higher here then in other countries such as New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

RealNewsOne decided to have look at what the Gay Profile of AustraliaIMG_0835 was, in other what makes up the gay community in Australia. According to the 2011 Census, there were around 33,700 same-sex couples in Australia, with 17,600 male same-sex couples and 16,100 female same-sex couples. Interestingly to note, the overwhelming majority of same-sex couples were described as de facto partners (96%), while there were 1,338 same-sex couples where one person was described as the husband or wife of the other. Also another interesting observation by the ABS was gay people are less likely than straight people to be living with a partner.

Age

When it came to the average age of a same sex couple it was about 40, which is younger than the average of a straight couple which is at 48. 76% of same sex couple according to the 2011 census were below the age of 50.

When it comes to age difference it is great amongst same-sex couples then straight couples. For male same-sex couples the age is difference is 6.5 years and for females it is 4.8 years, for straight couples the average age difference is 3.7 years.

Work and Income

When it comes income, males in a same-sex relationship, 18 % earn $2000  or more per week compared to 14% of males in a straight relationship, while female in a same sex reaction ship earned three times as much as females in a straight relationship.

The 4 highest ranking jobs for males in a same sex relationship are:

  • Retail managers
  • Sales assistants (General)
  • Advertising, public relations and sales managers
  • Registered nurses

For women in a same sex relationship the 4 highest ranking jobs are:

  • Registered nurses
  • Retail managers
  • Sales assistants (General)
  • Secondary school teachers

Accommodation

New South Wales had a higher than average proportion of same-sex couples, particularly male couples . 41% of Australia’s male same-sex couples, and 34% of Australia’s female same-sex couples live in NSW, with the majority living in Darlinghurst,Potts Point and Surry Hills.

Same-sex couples, particularly male same-sex couples, were much less likely than other couples to live in detached houses, and more likely to live in flats, units, apartments, or row/terrace houses.
