Obama Administration Focused On Closing Guantanamo Bay

The Obama administration has said it is focused on closing Guantanamo Bay, and doing it in a responsible manner. The administration also stated that it will continue to prosecute those that they can and to transfer those who they think should be transferred.

The United States Congress has been accused of trying to change the rules when it comes to Guantanamo Bay and have tried to put it in place very strict restrictions on the Obama Administration and what it can do when it comes to the closure of the prison. However, the administration has said that it will continue to work with Congress.

President Obama and the Secretary of State have said that they committed to closing Guantanamo Bay, The State department said this week “not just because it’s the right thing to do.. but because it hurts our national security every day that that prison is open.” The Obama administration said that they have always believed that Guantanamo Bay hurts the USA’s national security and that It is a propaganda tool for terrorists.

At the time of its establishment in January 2002, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld said the prison camp was established to detain extraordinarily dangerous prisoners, to interrogate prisoners in an optimal setting, and to prosecute prisoners for war crimes.

Detainees captured in the War on Terror, most of them from Afghanistan and much smaller numbers later from Iraq, the Horn of Africa and Southeast Asia were transported to the prison.
